Abstract

This paper examines available information on the benefits of bundled payments in maternity care. The paper provides information on the current state of general maternity programs, the types of maternity bundled payment models, best practices and pilot programs, the fully implemented programs, and identified gaps in bundled payment models for maternity care. The thorough review of current programs and Episodes of Care plans through the U.S. concluded that bundled prenatal care results in an overall decrease in cesarean section rates as well as improvements in incidence rates of newborn complications. The programs’ quality metrics have led to an improvement in various screening rate reporting.
