The National Quality Forum (NQF), with funding from the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services, convened a multi-stakeholder Maternal Morbidity and Mortality Committee to provide input and guidance on the identification of developed measures addressing maternal morbidity and mortality. The results of the scan will be used to produce two measurement frameworks: one for maternal morbidity and one for maternal mortality, to help identify areas for measurement development and gaps in maternal morbidity and mortality care.
For the environmental scan, NQF scanned resources such as PubMed and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists’ Practice Bulletins and Committee Options, as well as grey literature and web search engines to identify reports and white papers. From this search, 302 articles were fully reviewed for the scan. With input from the expert committee and NQF members, 93 measures and 38 measure concepts were identified and included in the scan.
